Causes and Treatments for Gum Disease

Posted .

Gum disease is a serious and dangerous dental issue that should be avoided at all costs. Unfortunately, many fail to take proper care of their teeth, gums and smile. When gum disease attacks, it causes swollen and tender gums, bleeding gums, bad breath, receding gums, loose teeth, lost teeth and more. To help you know more about gum disease in Las Vegas, Nevada, our dentist, Dr. William Robison, is happy to tell you all about the causes and treatments, which are:

Causes

The culprit of gum disease is plaque. Plaque is a white, sticky film that clings to your teeth and along the gumline. This plaque attacks the gums and severely irritates them. If the plaque is left to stay, it turns into tartar. The tartar then makes the gums pull away from the teeth and then spreads to the underlying bone. At this point, it begins deteriorating the bone and compromising the teeth.

Treatments

For the early stages of gum disease (gingivitis, which is the first stage), a professional dental cleaning will treat the disease. If necessary, your dentist will recommend visiting our office more often than every six months. For the later stages (periodontitis, which is the second stage), you will likely need scaling and root planing, laser therapy, bone and gum grafts, tooth extraction and more.
